| An installed smoke alarm can cut the
risk of dying in a home fire by nearly 50%. Remarkably at least
one-third of all smoke alarms installed in homes fail to operate when
fire strikes because of poor maintenance. Check your smoke alarm at
least once every month. If your home has smoke detectors wired into the
house's electrical system, they should also be tested monthly. Ideally
your house should have a battery-operated smoke alarm as well.
Change the batteries in your smoke
alarms at least once a year so marking this on a calendar ensures you
will not forget. The entire smoke alarm model or detector must be
replaced after ten years. Just as you can't smell when your nose is
plugged, the smoke alarm can't do its job when clogged with dust
particles. You should regularly clean your smoke alarm to avoid problems
when you need it most...in an emergency! |
